Jesse Wayne Brazel (Wayne) was likely born in Greenwood city, KS. in 1876. His fathers name was Jesse M. Brazel which might be why Jesse is called Wayne. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Brown county, Texas Wayne was known to be a good kid with a polite and kind attitude. He had blue eyes and was often seen wearing a Mexican-style sombrero. His father moved them into New Mexico in the early 1880s. This new home bordered the San Agustin Ranch owned by William W. Cox,

An interesting theory about this image from the late Jim Williams: "Billy the Kid's clothing and everything else he owned was confiscated after his Stinking Springs arrest on December 23, 1880, by Lincoln County Sheriff Pat Garrett. Garrett gave away Billy's bay mare to his deputy, Frank Stewart. It was not known what Garrett did with the rest of his belongings. Wayne Brazel was a neighbor to Garrett when they both lived near Organ, New Mexico around 1900. Brazel obviously had access to Billy's belongings because all three men are mocking him by wearing his clothes and personal items. Photo analysis: Two men have one pant leg tucked in their boots, representing "one foot in the grave," defined as; trapped by death with no possibility of escape. All three men have white lilies on their lapel, the flower most commonly associated with funerals. At the feet of Wayne Brazel, seated, is a sugarloaf sombrero. (closer to the grave?) If you compare the color of the wide hat band to his white shirt it is likely a (light) green hatband. The same description of the sombrero Billy was wearing before he was arrested. His vest is too small and it's doubtful that he could pull it together and button it. His white shirt is also too small and you can see how short the sleeves are on his right arm. His gamblers sleeve garters are equally out of place. There is a dark straight band at the top of his pants, a belt may be necessary if the pants are too small to fasten. Wayne's head is shaved. A possible explanation is in some cultures is was a custom to shave the deceased head. Other cultures required the immediate male relatives or the sons of the deceased to shave their head. The sombrero, vest, shirt, sleeve garters, and possible bow tie or ornament were likely Billy's. The boots and pants may have been Billy's as well. The man on the left is wearing a wore out, ripped, holey, small patterned shirt that is too small for him in the sleeves. He is making a point to pull out the vest with his thumb in the arm opening, possibly drawing attention to the lily flower. According to the Levi's official historian, his jeans look like "waist overalls" a pattern Levi's made that were sold throughout the west beginning in 1873. The historian added that a clearer photo is needed to be for sure. He may be wearing both pant legs tucked in his boots to show them off. One leg is positioned outward like he is drawing attention to the boots. The shirt, pants, boots, vest and possible tobacco bag in the vest pocket were likely Billy's. Will Cravens on the right is wearing suspenders to keep up pants that are too big for him. The pant waist is several inches above his own waist. The suspenders are mostly covered and are not displayed which may mean they are not Billy's. The coat is probably not Will's because no one else is wearing one. His shirt doesn't look like it has any buttons and may be a undershirt. He has a round circular object with a dark horizontal line extended out from it near his collar. It may be a woman's garter strap, typically worn by entertaining women. The object is being displayed and looks out of place on his collar. He is wearing a large square pinky ring on his left hand. Billy also wore a square pinky ring in the Dedrick tintype. The pants, coat, shirt, pinky ring and possible garter strap were likely Billy's. The standing men are wearing bandanas. The man of the left has an extra large one that has faint dark spots on the edge which may be a pattern or lace. Similar to the scarves worn by women of the 1870's that were well off like Sallie Chisum and Paulita Maxwell. It may have been a gift from an admirer. Both bandanas were likely Billy's, especially since Brazel is not wearing one. It is possible that both mens hats could be Billy's as well. Brazel is being honored because he is sitting. Likely because he got the clothes from his neighbor Pat Garrett. The sombrero is the best trophy, which would go to the man being honored."
