The film “Chisum” features a captivating portrayal of the Lincoln County War and showcases some of the most beloved characters of that time. The production team spared no effort to bring this piece of history to life and filmed on location at various sites such as the Fox studio ranch in California as well as Santa Fe, NM, Arizona, and Mexico. The screenwriter, Andrew Fenady, made significant efforts to study the intricacies of the Lincoln County War and was on set to ensure authenticity. However, the production team chose to alter several factual events to suit John Wayne’s acting style. Batjac Productions, co-owned by John Wayne and managed by his son Michael, produced the film. It should be noted that Patrick Wayne, another son of John Wayne, later portrayed Pat Garrett in the 1988 film “Young Guns.” In “Chisum,” Geoffrey Deuel expertly played Billy the Kid, while John Wayne’s masterful acting brought John S. Chisum to life. It was also this film that introduced Jesse Evans as Billy’s mortal enemy. It is essential to point out that the film presents a fictionalized version of the Lincoln County War.
