Let me take you back to the life of Jacob Basil Mathews, born on May 5, 1847, in Woodbury, Tennessee. Widely known as Billy, he was the second child of Walter Mathews and Antalise Ashford. Although both he and his brother fought during the Civil War, they fought on opposite sides with Billy joining the Republican Union Army. In 1867, he started a new life in New Mexico Territory. Mr. Mathews became associated with The Murphy/Dolan gang and led the posse that killed John Tunstall. During the assassination of Sheriff Brady, Mathews was shot by The Regulators but survived and even wounded Jim French. However, on June 3, 1904, at the age of 57, Billy Mathews passed away from pneumonia in Roswell, New Mexico, leaving behind his wife, Dora Matilda Bates, and three children. He rests at the South Park Cemetery in Roswell.
