Billy the Kid 1941
On May 30th, 1941, the United States saw the release of the film Billy the Kid. The movie, directed by David Miller and Frank Borzage, starred Robert Taylor in the lead role of Billy the Kid. Taylor was committed to nailing his portrayal of the famous outlaw and spent a rigorous month perfecting the left-handed shooting involved in the role. Although it was intended to be a colorized remake of the 1930 version based on the best-selling novel The Saga of Billy the Kid starring Johnny Mack Brown, the 1941 film was met with mixed reviews. The film tells the story of Billy breaking his friend out of jail and seeking revenge after his employer is killed. The movie was largely shot on location in Arizona and Monument Valley, and it had a budget of $1,411,000. Although it did not perform as well as hoped at the box office, it remains an interesting addition to the Billy the Kid film canon with fun facts such as Taylor being seen with a revolver supposedly from Billy’s collection, which was later proven to be fraudulent.
